How To Choose Colours For Your Home

When choosing the colour palette for your new home, it’s hard to know where to start. But don’t worry Austral Bricks is here to help.

One of the first questions that always comes to mind when beginning the colour process for the exterior of your home is “Should I select the Brick first, and then the Roof Tile?” Or “Should I select the Roof Tile first, and then the Brick?”

These are common questions to which we believe there’s no right or wrong answer. Sometimes the design of your home may dictate what to choose first, simply because one part of the home is most prominent than the other.

For example, A house positioned high up on a hill will have very visible walls; however the roof may not be noticeable at all. Therefore the brick selection may be the most important decision. Then again, a house positioned down low may have a roof line seen from the street, with little vision of the walls, so the roof tile is an important consideration.

There are always exceptions to the rule; however, as a guide our creative team have a clear direction which we believe will help you when selecting the colours for your home.

The Design Rule “60, 30, 10”

Designers have used a scale known as “60, 30, 10” for years. It’s simply a definition for the proportions of a design space.

The largest proportion of your design space has the largest impact. That is given the proportion of 60%. For the façade of your home this is the exterior walls. .

The next proportion of the design space is given the description of 30%. Although not as large as the 60%, it still has a large impact on the overall look of the design. For the façade of your home this is the roof tiles.

The final proportion of the design space is 10%. This is the least dominant area of the space, however no less important. In fact this selection can make or break the design of your home. For the façade of your home this is the gutter, fascia, windows and doors.
