Winners of the Austral Bricks Design Competition

Austral Bricks™ has pleasure in announcing the winners and commendations of the Austral Bricks™ -Architectural Ideas Competition 2010.

The Jury, John Gollings (Chair), Brian Zulaikha, Cathy Inglis, and Annabelle Pegrum met last week to deliberate over some wonderful entries in the competition.

Over 28 entries from around Australia were submitted and the jury were impressed by the standard to the entries in the Open Category.

open category

The winner of the open category was:

"Magic Carpet" by Sarah Crowley, David Brooksand Cheryl Hunt.
The jury stated:
"Magic Carpet" is a perfect entry; it ticks all the boxes.

It is a lyrical demonstration of the versatility of brick and a elegant demonstration of the brief. It conveys its intent very well and is a true urban experience. The complexity of the patterning and its use of the flat and fold highlights the structural integrity and possibility of brick as well as showcasing the range of Austral Bricks™ product.

This is a project that must be built.

The Jury chose to award two runner-up awards;
"Ugly Brick" by Justyna Karakiewicz and "Later Pharos" by Peter Kuhnell and Farzin Lotfi-Jam.

The Jury stated:

Justyna Karakiewicz's entry "Ugly Brick" is an extraordinarily imaginative and sophisticated story about brick and how imagination can overcome the mendacity of the material. The project showcases brick's inherent possibilities and it fuses everything that brick has been and could be; every technique and every texture.

We praise Justyna on the quality of the hand drawn images, which show, with no plans, a significant and complex series of spaces. The images created a belief of the veracity and sophistication of the project.

The project shows a profound understanding of the history of architecture through masonry buildings and demonstrates great understanding of the material while illustrating the organic potential and the possible fluidity of brick.

Peter Kuhnell & Farzin Lotfi-Jam's entry "Later Pharos" stood out in a group of entries that looked at iconic constructions. It demonstrates an understanding and a feeling of the beauty of brick.

They have created a tower within a lighthouse that works in a tight urban context and constrained space. It is a place to enter and a place to explore.

The project depicts brick in its truest sculptural form; it is inventive in the proposed use of brickwork and is an impressive reinterpretation of an ancient brick wonder of the world. This 21st Century wonder would draw people to and into it.

The high quality images of the entry showcase a building that celebrates the beauty of brick.

Student Category

The Jury did not award a student prize as they felt no student entries demonstrated excellence. They did make two commendations; "Heritage" by Madeleine Beech from the University of Melbourne and "Overlap" by Dominic Pandolfini from RMIT.

Both entries looked at brick in an inventive manner, building exciting shapes out of brick and the jury felt both students demonstrated commendable application to the intent of the competition.

The winner and runners up in th Open Category win a trip to the Venice Biennale, including a Vernissage pass.

Austral Bricks™ would like to thank all of those who entered the competition.
